You know you are in Chennai when ...

1> You pay 120 rupees to travel 3 kms. in an auto

2> You wake up at 5 in the morning as all the pressure cookers in the locality will be blaring away to glory in making that all so delicious sambhar.

3> The shopping streets will have shops names Saravana stores, Saravana furniture, Saravana Bhavan, Saravana tailors...

4> 3 out of every 5 women you find walking in the street will be having either a Nallis or a Pothis bag.

5> No billboards on the street

6> You meet a lot of IT people with nice Nick Names like SHANKY.. and when you ask them their real name it goes like - Shivaramakrishnan Venkatanarayan

And if you probe further as to how they got their Nick Name, you'd get to know that some white guy would have given them that name during his onsite posting.

Penisul Rigida

If amusing how the very sight of certain things can drive you wild. The immediate rush of blood to your head, heightened state of attention, anxiety, twitching of muscles are just some of spontaneous ways your body responds to RAGE.

To get to the point, one thing that really pisses my off is saree clad aunties riding their scooty/kinetic on the road. For some God forsaken reason, these aunties just dont know how to ride. Be it taking a right turn or a left, they can only look straight. Nor will they put the indicator, nor would they give any indication that they are taking a turn. They feel its their God given right to cut from the centre of the Road to wherever they like.

For heavens sake aunties !! Why don't you turn you head a bit to atleast look at the rear view mirrors !!
Why don't you loosen up a bit and not be as stiff as a 'PENISUL RIGIDA' !!!

My anger towards this species made me read up on Road Rage.

Road Rage is defined as an aggressive or angry behavior by a driver of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Such behavior might include rude gestures, verbal insults, deliberately driving in an unsafe or threatening manner, or making threats.

I do give rude gestures and do hurl a couple of verbal insults. But its the Saree clad women who drive unsafely ( cant quite say its deliberate )

The definition really made me wonder - Am I the victim of Road rage ?? or is it the Saree clad aunty ??

Organised Retail :- Real(i)ty Bites

Its been a year since I have been closely associated to Real Estate Sector. Don't know if I can consider myself fortunate or unfortunate, but from the time I joined in April 2008, I have been witness to the slide in the Real Estate sector.

Being part of the Retail Advisory Team, I have been fortunate enough to meet various Retailers and Developers. Each interaction has been a learning experience and with the market situation being so dynamic and volatile, the saying "Change is constant", appears to be bit to cliche.

Everyones trying to adapt to the changing market. Retailers reducing store sizes, changing formats, inventory optimization to name a few. On the other hand Developers have gone in for revenue share, minimum guarantee etc.

Given all this, I am still in awe of the kirana stores, who everyone pronounced would DIE with the advent of ORGANIZED RETAIL. The last couple of years have seen supermarkets cropping up in every nook and corner.
However, alls not well. While the kirana stores are still fighting it out, the last couple of months have seen a lot of supermarkets shut shop. It really made me wonder as to how these kirana stores have managed to pull it off.

1> CREDIT - A simple, but very vital feature of Kirana stores. Being present in literally every street of this country, and literally knowing every person on that street, goods on credit is easily available. Compare this to a supermarket where even if you are 1 Rs short, you would have to probably drop off an item from your shopping list. Surprising as it may be, I found myself too buying more from my neighborhood kirana store as he literally stocked up what ever I needed. Right from a lock(as i keep losing my keys often) to a comb( I keep losing it in my house :) ). Though he might not have an IT database or an MIS system, he clearly knows what his customer wants. A case in point. Me being a 'Hide n Seek' biscuit lover, had asked my kirana storewala twice for it. He didn't have it then. The third time I went, he had it stocked up. Compare this to a supermarket where they wouldn't really care for what I wanted.

2> ADAPTABILITY - The beauty of India is its diversity and with this diversity comes a huge difference in peoples consumption patterns. If Gujrathis like a lot of Ghee in their Chapatis the Tamilians would like a lot of sambhar with their Idli. So are the national chain of supermarkets able to gauge this. Well I hope their IT systems help them out with this. All I know that is kirana stores know to the dot as to what their customers want. To customize your stocks to a particular location is no easy task. We have easily aped the concept of supermarkets of the West, but they are no way close to the diversity we have in India.

3> TICKET SIZE - Indians generally follow the JIT(Just in Time) system of cooking. This means, they buy curd, milk, fruits etc. which would just last for a day or two. A lot of this is because of the Indian psyche of not stocking up much at home. Blame this on the decades of erratic power supply which could spoil the food items. Things have improved in terms of penetration of fridges, generators. However the Indian psyche hasn't changed much. Compare this to the American consumer who generally buys a weeks to a months supply. This is primarily because of the better power situation over there. So what does this mean for the Indian supermarkets. How do they offset this ?

4> REAL ESTATE COSTS - India is governed with lower labour costs and higher real estate costs. Compare this to America which has higher labour costs and lower real estate costs. To further negate the real estate costs in America, the Wal Marts and the Carrefours of the world are located around 15-20 kms outside the city. Now try aping this in India, and your in for a rude shock as it would easily take you an hour to do 15 kms. I know the above mentioned example is for Hypermarkets. Case in point, would you travel 3 kms to a supermarket , when you can get all the stuff you need at the end of your street.

Also the kirana stores are clearly at a huge advantage, as they normally don't take great "Retail locations", hence the rental they pay is really low. They do not invest in labour as its mostly owner run. Nor do they invest in fit-outs, lighting etc. Also, tonnes of stuff would be stacked up in the minimum possible place. So simple as it pay seem, its a really ingenious concept !!! The Kiranawala has manged to negate the Real Estate as well as the labour cost.

5> GOODWILL - This is something which is intangible, but I feel plays a big role. I mostly get back late from work and would land up not having any thing to eat for dinner. I once remember reaching the nearby supermarket at 10 and the guard shouted that the computers were shut off and they were going to close the store. Dejected, I decided to carry on home. There was a kirana store just next to my house and he already put his shutters down. Thought I'd still give it a shot in the dark, and asked him if he had bread. He gave a broad smile, and happily opened his shop again just to give me bread. This is Goodwill people, somethings am pretty sure a supermarket will never be able to give.

6> EXPERIENCE - I have been in Muscat for 16 years, and organized Retail was existing there way back in the late 80's. I remember whenever my family used to go shopping, there used to be ample space in the alleys. In fact, there was enough space for 2 trolleys . Compare this to our very own Indian supermarkets where there isn't even space for 2 people to pass by and you would inevitably land up rubbing against each others bodies.

I wish to conclude with a simple -
Have we really understood the Indian Consumer ?

To end from where I began, Change is constant. If you cant change at the pace change is happening, then the weakest would always get weeded out.

From what I observe, the Kirana stores are here to stay.

It been 2 years since I entered the portals of LIBA (Loyola Institute of Business Administration ). I would call my time at LIBA an "Interesting experience". Thought i had seen it all during my engineering days in Manipal, but was proved wrong. Met more people and made a few friends. The entire experience was all worth it. Had quit my job in TCS to do my MBA and landed up with what i can call my Dream Job. I also met people who are going to be a significant part of my future.
Anyways, all said and done about my life at LIBA, the one thing that i really loved out here was the beautiful Campus. Spread over 100 acres, its heaven in a Concrete jungle. No where else in Chennai(or for that fact any other metro) would you get clean air to breathe. Loyola was set up by the Jesuits over a century ago. Its so amazing how the Europeans are such great planners. Setting up campuses which can even take on the nuances of the present world, unlike we Indians who build roads and flyovers which run out of their purpose even before they are completed. Anyways, I know of other beautiful campuses like St. Aloysius College, Mangalore which are also set up by the Jesuits. The whole ambience does make a huge difference to the learning environment. Have attached some pictures of the Loyola Campus. Hope you like them.

Cheers.

ICICI Direct Sucks..!!!!

Yet another day when the ICICI Direct website goes down. Its become all too normal now. And yes, ICICI direct follows Murphy's Law. The site is down whenever you need it.

Suppose its a bullish market and you want to buy stocks, you wouldnt be able to buy.
If the market is crashing and you want to exit, you wouldnt be able to exit.
Market opens at 9.55 am. you would only be able to open your account by 10.45 am.

Infact whenever its works properly, I begin to worry if everythings all right.
I have worked in the IT field before and pretty well know some of the issues that they are facing.

An IT system is built on the models of scalability in the future. You just cannot design a system for today. You have to think of the future and the growth in your customer base. As for ICICI Direct, they have only worked on increasing their customer base and not worked on scaling up their systems and hence all the servers and databases are not able to take the load (the sessions that are created whenever you log into the database ), Once you log in, a session is opened at the database and once that crosses a limit that it can handle, the entire database crashes. If its running at full utilisation its begins to slow down. Now a cause for concern is the initial model that they have built. If you screw this system up, then you are going to have loads of issues when you scale up your system.
From the looks of it their back end systems are pretty screwed up. And am just worried as to how long this will go on. This is because whenever you click on the BUY
or SELL button. There are loads of procedures launched and triggers fired(IT jargon - Dont worry about it). So any screw up in the system could be fatal. A possible example is that you buy the shares, your money gets deducted and no shares get credited to your account. But it would reflect in the back end systems that the shares have been credited. I also saw this on one discussion forum where a guy wanted to buy MFs and the money got deducted but he did anot get any units. In fact i myself tried buying MFs from ICICI Direct and just as i was going to click on the final button, i thought i should see the Terms and conditions. I was shoccked to see that they happily stated the following. "Neither ICICIDirect, nor any of the Mutual Funds shall be liable for any failure to perform its obligations, to the extent that such performance has been delayed, hindered or prevented by systems failures, network errors, delay or loss of data due to the above and in circumstances of acts of God, floods, epidemics, quarantine, riot or civil commotion and war." Just google ICICI Direct sucks and you will get tonnes of stories :) .

Just try calling up the ICICI Direct customer care. You will mostly get the automated reply - Due to the high call volumes we will not be able to take your call. Please call later". A classic example of how if IT systems are not implemented properly it is a disaster in the making.

Anyways....Its another painful day where i want to check my cash projection and i only get the below message. Its been 8 hours since its down.

P.S. - I remember in my earlier workplace our client(telecom player) used to strip us naked in case we asked even for a 4 hour downtime on early monday mornings when there would be no calls to the customer care. And that too these would be maintainance downtimes and not even a system crash like is the case with ICICI Direct. And the best part is - ICICI Direct crashes during market hours. Absolutely inexcusable.

And yeah, if you want to definetly loose money try intraday on ICICI Direct :). Only these people can make you go from a profitable position to a loss making one. Frank advice to all people. Please stay away from ICICI Direct..!!!

GYAN :- For the uninitiated ICICI Direct "provides" online trading services in Stocks, Commodities and Mutual Funds.

Restoring order.....

I thought the best way to get back and try to restore order in the way i go about things was to clean my room first.Have abolutely no idea after how many months i am cleaning it.Started at 4.30 pm and ended at 8 pm. Quite a long and tiring process. Anyways, its the first step towards controlling how i go about my life. Am just currently charting out the things i want to do tomorrow.
Have attached the pics of my room after cleaning :D
Got a few shocked faces from my friends as they entered my room. One even asked if
I was keeping well ...he.he.

Do you control life ..or does life control you ..??

Warning :- Those who dont like the use of explicit language please refrain from reading this.

To start off, am in a pretty fucked up mood as i write this blog. Why..?? Well thats because I have done things that I have decided to stay away from. Things like what i have mentioned in the prior post. And as to the reasons for my fucked up mood, let me just say that things didnt go my way. Its just put a serious question mark on my resolve and focus to do or not do things. Its put me in waters that i have not tested before.. An eery feeling of things not being in control .. a time when life takes control over you.. Well some say, "Its destiny that controls your life"...I just have my middle finger to show the proponents of this theory..Its you who control your life...The thing is I have fucked up..and fucked up big time in the past couple of months.... I have just let myself drift away..

-> I no longer say my morning prayer..a prayer that i used to say every morning from my childhood...
-> No longer do i plan for the next day, in terms of the number of free hours that i have and what best i could do with it...
-> Havent cleaned my room in ages...
-> Had planned many things during the last sem.. Learn photoshop, excel, working on some B-Plans i had in mind, jiving, work on my fitness and tonnes more...

Instead, I havent done a single freaking thing..Just been a blob on this planet...eating away and putting on more tyres .....!!!!

To sum it all .. I have fucked it up...As to why i have gotten enlightenment today.. I dont know...I guess I just feel guilty for not going about life in a way I want it to go ... Another helping factor would be the inspiration I draw from my girlfriend who strives for excellence even in Institutes of Mediocracy...!!!

P.S. - Have attached pics of my room :D
